Sea Buckthorn ‘Blakeney Gold’ (Hippophae rhamnoides)
You are buying 1 organically grown Sea Buckthorn ‘Blakeney Gold’ (Hippophae rhamnoides) root trainer plug plant.
Please note:
Root trainer plug plants are available year-round. We always aim to process orders within two days, however there may be unavoidable delays in despatch during extreme weather, so please be patient.
Organically and sustainably grown in our forest garden here at Poet’s Acre, located in the heart of 1000 acres of organic farmland and ancient woodland in rural North Norfolk. Plants are grown as part of a sustainable management plan that encourages diversity and resilience. The land here is completely organic, we do not use pesticides or sprays of any kind.
Plant Care
Your Sea Buckthorn plug plant will arrive carefully packaged to prevent damage or drying out. Root trainer plugs encourage strong, deep root growth, giving your plant the best possible start.
On arrival, water the plant if the compost feels dry. You may pot it on into a larger pot for its first year to encourage extra root growth before planting in its final position. If planting directly out, choose a sunny, well-drained site. Sea Buckthorn tolerates poor, sandy, and coastal soils. Dig a hole just larger than the plug, firm gently, and water thoroughly. Space plants 2–3m apart for hedging.
Prune lightly to shape if required, but avoid heavy cutting. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Both male and female plants are needed for fruit production.
Postage & Packaging
Price includes postage, and we send all our plants by Royal Mail 48 with tracking. We aim to post items within 2 working days of your order, weather permitting. We use as much recycled material for packaging as possible.
About Sea Buckthorn ‘Blakeney Gold’
Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a hardy deciduous shrub native to Europe and Asia. The variety ‘Blakeney Gold’ produces heavy crops of large, golden-orange berries in late summer. Plants typically grow 3–5m tall and form dense, thorny thickets, making them ideal for coastal planting and wildlife hedges.
Culinary Uses
The bright orange berries are edible and exceptionally rich in vitamin C. They can be used in juices, jams, syrups, sauces, wines, and liqueurs, though they are very tart and usually require sweetening.
Garden Uses
Excellent for hedging, coastal planting, and erosion control on sandy soils. Its silvery foliage and colourful berries make it ornamental as well as practical.
Wildlife Uses
The berries provide valuable winter food for birds, while the dense, thorny branches offer excellent nesting and shelter sites. The flowers attract pollinators in spring.
