Italian Alder (Alnus cordata)

You are buying 1 organically grown Italian Alder (Alnus cordata) plant in a 2 litre pot.

Please note:
Potted plants are available year-round. We always aim to process orders within two days, however there may be unavoidable delays in despatch during extreme weather, so please be patient.

Organically and sustainably grown in our forest garden here at Poet’s Acre, located in the heart of 1000 acres of organic farmland and ancient woodland in rural North Norfolk. Plants are grown as part of a sustainable management plan that encourages diversity and resilience. The land here is completely organic, we do not use pesticides or sprays of any kind.

Plant Care

Your Italian Alder will arrive in a 2 litre pot with a strong, well-developed root system. On arrival, water if the compost feels dry. You may pot it on into a larger container to encourage further growth, or plant directly into its final position.

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded site with moist but well-drained soil. Italian Alder is a nitrogen fixer, very tolerant of poor soils and exposed sites. Dig a hole slightly larger than the pot, remove the plant, and set it at the same depth as it was growing in the pot. Firm soil gently and water thoroughly. Space 3–5m apart for shelterbelts or woodland planting.

Italian Alder is fast-growing and low-maintenance. It fixes nitrogen in the soil, improving fertility, and may be coppiced or pollarded if desired.

Postage & Packaging

Price includes postage, and we send all our plants by Royal Mail 48 with tracking. We aim to post items within 2 working days of your order, weather permitting. We use as much recycled material for packaging as possible.

About Italian Alder (Alnus cordata)

Italian Alder is a hardy, fast-growing deciduous tree native to southern Italy and Corsica. Reaching 20–25m tall, it has glossy, heart-shaped leaves and produces attractive catkins in spring. It is valued for timber, shelter, and soil improvement.

Craft Uses

Alder wood is durable underwater and has been traditionally used for foundations, piles, and furniture.

Garden Uses

Excellent as a drought tolerant nitrogen fixer for shelterbelts, hedgerows, forest gardens or as a specimen tree. Italian Alder thrives where other trees may struggle, including poor soils and exposed sites.

Wildlife Uses

The catkins are an early pollen source for bees, while the canopy provides habitat for birds. Its nitrogen-fixing roots enhance surrounding biodiversity.
