Please note:
Root trainer plug plants are available year-round. We always aim to process orders within two days, however there may be unavoidable delays in despatch during extreme weather, so please be patient.
Organically and sustainably grown in our forest garden here at Poet’s Acre, located in the heart of 1000 acres of organic farmland and ancient woodland in rural North Norfolk. Plants are grown as part of a sustainable management plan that encourages diversity and resilience. The land here is completely organic, we do not use pesticides or sprays of any kind.
Plant Care
Your Lilac plug plant will arrive carefully packaged to prevent damage or drying out. Root trainer plugs encourage strong, deep root growth, giving your plant the best possible start. The roots are dusted with mycorrhizal spores to enhance their connection with the soil microbiome, ensuring vigorous growth.
When you receive your plant, remove it from the packaging as soon as possible and water it gently if the compost feels dry. You can either plant it directly into the ground or pot it on into a larger pot for its first year to encourage extra root and top growth before planting into its final position. If potting on, use a peat-free compost with added organic matter, and place the pot in a sunny, sheltered spot. Keep the compost evenly moist but not waterlogged, and feed monthly with a balanced organic fertiliser during the growing season.
Planting Out Instructions
When planting in the garden, choose a sunny or lightly shaded location with fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a hole just larger than the root ball, and plant the plug at the same depth it was in the pot. Firm the soil gently around the roots and water thoroughly. For best results, enrich the planting hole with compost or well-rotted manure. Space plants 1.5–2.5m apart depending on whether you want them as a specimen shrub or in a hedge. Apply a mulch layer around the base to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Lilacs require little maintenance once established. Remove faded flower clusters promptly after blooming to encourage good bud formation for the following year. Occasional light pruning in summer can help maintain shape, but avoid heavy cutting as this can reduce flowering. Over time, suckers may appear around the base, which can be removed or transplanted.

About Lilac (Syringa vulgaris)
Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) is a hardy, deciduous shrub native to the Balkan Peninsula, prized for its spectacular clusters of fragrant, tubular flowers in spring. Typically growing 4–6m tall, it forms a bushy, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree. The blooms range from pale to deep purple, sometimes white, and are highly attractive to pollinators. Lilacs thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, rewarding gardeners with reliable colour and fragrance year after year.
Culinary Uses
Lilac blossoms are edible and can be used to add a subtle floral note to syrups, jellies, and desserts. The flowers may also be crystallised for cake decoration or infused in vinegar or honey.
Garden Uses
Lilac is a classic cottage garden favourite, ideal as a feature shrub, informal hedge, or background planting in mixed borders. Its striking flowers and fragrance make it perfect near paths, windows, or seating areas. It associates beautifully with roses, peonies, and spring bulbs, creating a succession of colour and scent.
Wildlife Uses
Lilac flowers are rich in nectar and highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The dense branching also provides shelter and nesting opportunities for garden birds.
