Common Broom
(Cytisus scoparius)
2L pot plant
Common Broom (Cytisus scoparius)
You are buying 1 organically grown Common Broom (Cytisus scoparius) plant in a 2 litre pot.
Please note:
Potted plants are available year-round. We always aim to process orders within two days, however there may be unavoidable delays in despatch during extreme weather, so please be patient.
Organically and sustainably grown in our forest garden here at Poet’s Acre, located in the heart of 1000 acres of organic farmland and ancient woodland in rural North Norfolk. Plants are grown as part of a sustainable management plan that encourages diversity and resilience. The land here is completely organic, we do not use pesticides or sprays of any kind.
Plant Care
Your Broom will arrive in a 2 litre pot with a strong, established root system. On arrival, water the plant if the compost feels dry. You may pot it on into a larger container or plant directly into its final position.
Choose a sunny, well-drained site. Broom thrives in poor soils and does not require rich compost or fertiliser. Dig a hole slightly larger than the pot, remove the plant, and place it at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Firm gently and water well. Space plants 1.5–2m apart.
Minimal care is required. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth, but avoid cutting into old wood as it may not regenerate.
Postage & Packaging
Price includes postage, and we send all our plants by Royal Mail 48 with tracking. We aim to post items within 2 working days of your order, weather permitting. We use as much recycled material for packaging as possible.
About Common Broom (Cytisus scoparius)
Common Broom is a hardy, deciduous shrub native to Western Europe. It grows to 2–3m tall, with upright stems and masses of bright yellow, pea-like flowers in late spring and early summer, followed by dark seed pods.
Craft Uses
Traditionally, the flexible branches were used for thatching, basketry, and broom-making.
Garden Uses
This nitrogen fixer is an excellent choice for poor soils, sunny slopes, or naturalistic planting schemes. Its golden flowers brighten the garden and combine well with grasses and wildflowers. Also valuable for stabilising sandy soils.
Wildlife Uses
The nectar-rich flowers attract bees and pollinators, while its dense structure provides cover for birds and small animals.
About Poet’s Acre
Poet’s Acre is a forest garden project, creating a continuously expanding repository of regionally adapted plants and a haven for wildlife and threatened species of all kinds. Our work is supported by a small family-run nursery growing plants for gardens, forest gardens, food forests, and permaculture projects. Our aim is to grow healthy, chemical-free plants for diversity, resilience, and climate adaptability, encouraging people to connect with the land, themselves, and each other.
